Storing food in the Kaizen Home Goods reusable snack bags

After using seven reusable sandwich bags to store all of my snacks, sandwiches, and leftovers for over two months, and washing each one by hand and in the dishwasher multiple times, I think the Stasher Reusable Silicone Bag is the best reusable sandwich bag for most people. It’s pricey, but by paying extra you get versatility. In addition to being great for holding snacks and sandwiches, it’s safe to wash in the dishwasher and use in the oven, freezer, microwave, and for sous-vide cooking.

The Stasher Reusable Silicone Bag won me over with its versatility and durability. It has every feature I could want from something I store food in — it’s reusable, leakproof, and safe to use in the oven, freezer, microwave, and dishwasher. The company behind it, a Certified B Corporation and 1% for the Planet member, is also one of the industry leaders in social responsibility.

If you want a reusable stand-up bag, I recommend the Stasher Reusable Silicone Stand-Up Bag. I loved how it swallowed tons of food, like an entire package of strawberries or 10 baked chicken drumsticks. The Stand-Up Bag, like the original Stasher Bag, is safe to use in the oven, freezer, microwave, and dishwasher.

The main downside to the Stasher bags is their price. Not everyone wants to spend over $10 for a single reusable bag. If you want a great value, I recommend the Kaizen Home Goods Reusable Storage Bags. This budget Amazon option performed just as well as pricier brand-name bags and costs much less per bag. The seller doesn’t recommend putting them in the dishwasher, though.

How to Choose the Best Reusable Sandwich & Snack Bags for You

Material

Silicone is the most versatile material for reusable bags. It’s durable, leakproof, and usually safe for use in the freezer, dishwasher, oven, and microwave. Many silicone bags can also be used for sous-vide cooking. They’re BPA-free, PVC-free, and plastic-free. However, silicone bags are usually the most expensive.

PEVA is cheaper than silicone but less versatile. Reusable PEVA bags are generally leakproof and freezer-safe. Some are dishwasher-safe on the top rack on low heat. They can’t be used in the oven or microwave, though.

Polyester and polyester blends are mostly used to make reusable sandwich bags with fun and colorful patterns. They’re freezer-safe and dishwasher-safe on the top rack. They usually have a zipper or velcro closure instead of a pinch seal. They usually aren’t leakproof, though, and aren’t safe to use in the oven or microwave.

Important Features to Consider

Dishwasher-safe: I found this to be my favorite extra feature. I liked the added convenience of being able to wash a bag in the dishwasher. However, hand washing each bag was still easy enough.

Leakproof: If you carry around lots of moist or soupy foods for lunch, I’d recommend getting leakproof reusable bags. For typical sandwiches and snacks, however, I didn’t need this feature. The silicone and PEVA bags I tested are all leakproof.

Microwave-safe: If you tend to heat up leftovers in the containers you store them in, I think this is a worthwhile feature. The two silicone Stasher bags I tested are both microwave-safe.

Oven-safe: Here’s a feature for those who like to reheat food the old-fashioned way. The two silicone Stasher bags I tested are both oven-safe up to 400°F. When I reheated food in them the food did have a slight smell and aftertaste of silicone, however. An eco-friendly alternative would be to heat the food up on a baking sheet with a reusable silicone baking mat.

How We Tested

Food Storage

For two months I used the reusable bags around my home, kitchen, and office and on day trips to store my snacks, sandwiches, and leftovers. I used them to store apple slices, avocados, strawberries, bananas, carrots, chips, cookies, salmon, sandwiches, chicken drumsticks, roasted vegetables, and more.

Leak Test

Leaky food storage bags can be a big inconvenience. So, upon receiving the bags, I filled each with water, closed it, then turned it upside down and shook it vigorously to see whether or not any water came out.

I repeated this test after two months of use to see whether hand washing, dishwashing, and everyday wear and tear had affected each bag’s seal.

Dishwashing & Hand Washing

Hand washing the Bumkins reusable sandwich bag

During my months of testing, I washed each bag by hand and in the dishwasher (on the top rack) multiple times to see how they’d hold up.

Tip: When drying your reusable sandwich bag, place a glass upside down on your dish drying rack then place the bag upside down over the glass. The glass keeps the bag open, allowing it to dry quicker.

Oven & Microwave Tests

Reheating food in a reusable bag in the oven

Stasher claims its reusable silicone bags are oven- and microwave-safe. I wanted to test these claims.

To do so, I first heated up food in each Stasher bag in the microwave. I heated up a sandwich in the original Stasher bag and a can of soup in the Stand-Up Bag.

Next, I reheated leftovers in each Stasher bag in the oven at 350°F. I reheated roasted vegetables in the original Stasher bag and a few chicken drumsticks in the Stand-Up Bag.

After each test, I visually inspected the bags for warping or damage. I then hand washed them to see whether or not they’d stained from the food inside.

The Stasher bag is a reusable sandwich bag with plenty of extra tricks up its sleeve. It can be used as a standard sandwich or snack bag, of course, and it’s also safe to use in the oven (up to 400°F), freezer, microwave, and for sous-vide cooking.

It’s dishwasher-safe which makes cleaning a cinch. Unlike the other bags I tested, after a few runs in the dishwasher it showed no signs of wear or warping. It’s also easy to hand wash.

I liked the bag’s leakproof pinch seal. It made it easy to carry moist foods, such as washed grapes, without having to worry about the bag leaking in my backpack.

The Stasher bag isn’t perfect, though. Beyond its price, the pinch seal can be difficult to open. If you have arthritis in your hands it may be a challenge. Fortunately, ‘burping’ the bag by squeezing the air out is an easy workaround.

The Stasher Stand-Up Bag quickly became my go-to reusable bag for large amounts of food. It isn’t ideal for sandwiches because of its size and shape, but lots of snacks and even entire meals easily fit inside.

The Stand-Up Bag swallowed an entire package of strawberries with enough room left over for a second. I was also able to fit 10 chicken drumsticks inside at one time. The bag looked nearly empty even with an entire can of soup inside. This thing has volume.

The Stasher Stand-Up Bag easily swallows an entire package of strawberries.

I loved the stand-up feature because it made accessing any food inside quick and easy. The other stand-up bags I tested weren’t as easy to get food in and out of, a minor drawback, to be fair.

Like the original Stasher bag, the Stand-Up Bag is safe to use in the oven (up to 400°F), microwave, and for sous-vide cooking. It’s freezer- and dishwasher-safe, too.

The Kaizen bags look and feel like a knock-off version of the pricier (re)zip bags, reviewed below. Both brands’ bags are 100% PEVA. They both sport a similar resealable top. They’re both leakproof.

The main difference is the price. The Kaizen bags are a fair bit cheaper as of this writing. While I’ve been burnt in the past on budget Amazon brands, this is one that performs its basic task well and that I feel comfortable recommending.

The Kaizen bags aren’t dishwasher-safe according to the seller. However, during my testing I washed mine in the dishwasher (on the top rack) multiple times. They show only the slightest signs of warping.

I expect if you were to always wash them in the dishwasher — or if your dishwasher runs hotter than mine — they’d eventually warp to the point of unusability. But you might be able to get away with adding them to the occasional dishwasher cycle (on the top rack on low heat). Regardless, hand washing, the seller’s recommended cleaning method, isn’t a big inconvenience.

If you need a good reusable sandwich bag, don’t want to splurge on a Stasher bag, and don’t need bags that are safe to use in the oven and microwave, this is the brand I recommend.

Key Features

  • Material: 100% PEVA
  • Leakproof: Yes
  • Dishwasher-safe: No, though I washed it in the dishwasher on the top rack multiple times with only slight warping
  • Microwave-safe: No
  • Oven-safe: No
  • Freezer-safe: Yes
  • Sous-vide-safe: No

Other Reusable Sandwich Bags We Tested

(re)zip Lay-Flat Reusable Storage Bag

(re)zip Lay-Flat Reusable Storage Bag

The (re)zip bags are similar in look and feel to regular sandwich bags. They could pass as slightly thicker Ziploc bags.

Like you’d expect from a typical sandwich bag, it holds sandwiches and snacks just fine and does little else. The (re)zip bags aren’t safe for use in the oven or microwave, but they are leakproof, freezer-safe, and top-rack dishwasher safe. For a basic reusable sandwich bag those are all the features you need.

As of this writing the (re)zip bags are cheaper than the Stasher bags but more expensive than budget knockoffs like the Kaizen bags. And they aren’t notably better than the Kaizen bags. They’re good but their price makes them hard to recommend.

Key Features

  • Material: 100% PEVA
  • Leakproof: Yes
  • Dishwasher-safe: Yes, top rack and low heat, but hand washing is recommended
  • Microwave-safe: No
  • Oven-safe: No
  • Freezer-safe: Yes
  • Sous-vide-safe: No

(re)zip Stand-Up Reusable Storage Bag

(re)zip Stand-Up Reusable Storage Bag

The (re)zip Stand-Up bag is an acceptable alternative to the Stasher Stand-Up bag. Its one advantage over the Stasher is its base, which folds up when empty, making it easier to store than the bulky Stasher.

Otherwise, the (re)zip Stand-Up is slightly inferior. The biggest size I tested doesn’t hold as much food. It’s not oven- or microwave-safe. It’s dishwasher-safe but only on the top rack on low heat.

The bags come in a colorful set of varying sizes. The smallest sizes were so tiny I had little idea what to put in them other than a single snack serving, such as apple slices. The medium and large sizes were my favorites and were big enough to hold leftovers from half a can of salmon to multiple servings of roasted vegetables.

Key Features

  • Material: 100% PEVA
  • Leakproof: Yes
  • Dishwasher-safe: Yes, top rack and low heat, but hand washing is recommended
  • Microwave-safe: No
  • Oven-safe: No
  • Freezer-safe: Yes
  • Sous-vide-safe: No

Bumkins Reusable Bag

Bumkins Reusable Bag

The Bumkins bag is a colorful 100% polyester bag seemingly designed for a single purpose: holding sandwiches and snacks for a kid’s lunchbox.

If that’s what you’re looking for in a reusable sandwich bag, this is an excellent option. I chose the outdoorsy pattern out of the multiple fun designs. The designs range from comic book characters to rainbows and unicorns.

The Bumkins bag isn’t leakproof, but it is dishwasher-safe on the top rack. Also, I found it to be one of the easiest bags to hand wash.

Those planning to store all sorts of food in their reusable lunch bag shouldn’t get this one; you’ll eventually be limited by its lack of versatility. Parents who want to brighten up their kid’s lunchbox, look no further.

Key Features

  • Material: 100% polyester
  • Leakproof: No
  • Dishwasher-safe: Yes, top rack
  • Microwave-safe: No
  • Oven-safe: No
  • Freezer-safe: Yes
  • Sous-vide-safe: No

LunchSkins Reusable Bag

LunchSkins Reusable Bag

The LunchSkins is another patterned reusable bag seemingly designed for the grade schooler’s lunchbox.

I liked it slightly less than the Bumkins bag because of its stiffness and velcro closure. But it worked just fine for holding food. If all you want is a colorful reusable bag, I recommend browsing the Bumkins and LunchSkins designs and picking your (or your child’s) favorite.

The LunchSkins, like the Bumkins, is not leakproof, but it is dishwasher-safe on the top rack. The velcro closure showed slight signs of wear after a couple runs in the dishwasher, so if you get this one I’d recommend hand washing it.

Key Features

  • Material: 62.5% polyester, 32.5% cotton, 5% polyurethane
  • Leakproof: No
  • Dishwasher-safe: Yes, top rack
  • Microwave-safe: No
  • Oven-safe: No
  • Freezer-safe: Yes
  • Sous-vide-safe: No
